The longest serving Japanese soldier in World War II, he hid in the jungles of the Philippines for nearly three decades because he couldn’t believe the war was over. Neither messages from his family nor news of peace persuaded him to surrender. He stopped fighting only in 1974, on the personal orders of his former superior.
