In our world teeming with myriad species, we stumble upon some truly peculiar creatures that jolt us out of our everyday familiarity. One man’s encounter with a seemingly lifeless, parched fish that judders back to life with just a trickle of water is one such astounding event.
This astonishing incident, caught on a video that swiftly viralized on social media, features a fish that appears as desiccated and brittle as an undead, ghost-like creature. But, in an unexpected twist, with a splash of water aimed at its mouth, the fish suddenly springs back to life, flummoxing the onlookers.
Known as the Suckermouth Catfish or more commonly as Pleco, this exceptional species has developed an evolutionary adaptation that enables it to enter a dormant or hibernation-like state. The fish possesses an extraordinary survival instinct that allows it to live under hardened, dehydrated mud for months on end, patiently waiting for the arrival of the next downpour.
Unlike most of its aquatic brethren, Plecos can even survive outside water for an astounding 30 hours, provided they’ve stored enough oxygen in their abdomen.
Adaptive and remarkably resilient, this air-breathing freshwater catfish can weigh up to three pounds. The Suckermouth Catfish depends on a unique organ linked to its gill cavity, which assists in its breathing.
Employing its gills for respiration, they are also able to ascend to the water’s surface to inhale air when the oxygen levels in the water deplete.
The Suckermouth Catfish, indigenous to northern South America, derives its name from its distinct mouth, bearing a close resemblance to a suction cup. But plecos are not the lone category of fish capable of air-breathing.
